“I like my beer cold, my TV loud and my homosexuals FLAMING” – A social study of the representations of homosexuals on ‘The Simpsons’.

From conducting my methodologies, the questionnaire in particular, I was able to develop confidence as I was removed from my usual, non confronting environment. This will help me in other social aspects of life, particularly with public speaking and socialising within a group. From the Personal Interest Project, I have also experienced maturation, as it was an independent research task. I needed to diminish my procrastination, research outside my normal frame of reference, and not hesitate in asking others for help.

In conducting the research for my PIP, I hoped to gain an insight into the effects of stereotyping on the formation of a personal identity for homosexuals. I was able to achieve this through both primary research, an interview and a media analysis, and secondary research. This has made me empathise and gain a new perspective on homosexuals as a minority group and other minority groups in society. Another important aim of my PIP was to analyse the media’s role in the socialisation of persons and groups. I found that the media, as a key agent of socialisation can contribute to a person’s identity and develop their opinions, particularly teenagers. However, other key agents of socialisation, such as the family and peers are also important and can have strong effects on teenagers.

The PIP has undoubtedly improved my social and cultural literacy. It has enhanced my ability to analyse the media, an important tool for later life. Also, I have become more aware of issues facing homosexuals, such as stereotyping, discrimination (both social and legislative) and prejudices. The PIP has also taught me not to judge people and groups, particularly if I do not understand their personal circumstances. It has showed me that everyone is different, and everyone has different viewpoints, depending on their socialisation and each of these need to be heard and valued.

The PIP process has been an enjoyable experience, and I feel a great sense of achievement at having finished one of the most challenging tasks I have faced in my school life. I feel privileged to have been able to research my favourite television show in great detail, and view its effect on society. My perception of the show has changed forever, as I have analysed it in detail, rather than merely watching it on a daily basis.
