“Jew-ish”- How does the uncovering of Jewish hereditary impact upon an individual’s sense of self identity?

Through my investigation, I have come to understand that there is a broad spectrum of effects on an individual’s identity as a result of the discovery of Jewish heredity.

The reaction to new found heritage is not uniform. It is highly dependent on the prior sense of self. Yet even when early enculturation and socialisation are similar, as in my father’s and aunt’s case, factors of personality, micro world experience and macro world influence can result in opposing responses. My aunt did not disregard the discovery, yet it did not result in any lasting impact on her identity. For my father, the discovery has been one of revelation. Answering needs within him, it has been an overwhelmingly enriching experience, despite the severe continuing self-examination he has undergone.

This process, however, has not been limited to those undergoing the experience. Through researching this cross-cultural experience, I have also gained a better understanding of what my father has undergone and what has prompted him to respond in the way he has. While I was previously critical of this response, I now understand that human behaviour is the product of complex and dynamic factors, but never something that can be judged by outward appearances.
