‘The Times They Are A-Changin’

Through the processes entailed in my PIP I have cultivated a better understanding of many issues. My investigation has allowed me to explore the personal experiences of many individuals, providing me with insight into their varying ideas and personal reflections. Exploring the differing attitudes of such a large number of people has impressed upon me the multitude of viewpoints existent in relation to any one issue. My PIP has also required me to understand and empathise with social and age groups divergent to my own (university students in general and students from the 1960s and 70s), thus enhancing my social and cultural literacy.

I have learnt a considerable amount about an important aspect of Australia’s social and cultural history, as well as its present social, cultural and political environment. I have come to see that dissent within our society is not as effective or prevalent as it once was. My opinion of today’s university students also changed – although I originally perceived them as being apolitical and conservative, I now realise that some radicalism remains. My study of the nature of contemporary university life has perhaps better equipped me for experiences I may encounter next year, should I attend university.
